The Frames in the HSC Exam
Section ISection 1 consists of 3 questions (Question 1, 2, 3) which may consist of parts.
You will be given specific source material for each question. This material may include:
Each question will ask you about practice, the conceptual framework or the frames. There will be at least one question on each. You need to figure out what the question is asking you to do, and what information you need to include. |
Section IISection II requires you to pick JUST ONE of five questions to answer in-depth.
You will have to be prepared to answer these questions, you will need to know in detail at least 3 case studies for AT LEAST two areas, so you can answer the question effectively. Case studies should have a theme, they are not just generic information. Pick a topic you are interested in, that you will be able to answer questions on within the frames, conceptual framework or practice. Cover all bases with various case studies. Use this website to build case studies that focus on the frames. Remember to use each frame in relation to your topic. Choose artworks, artists, critics and conventions of art you are passionate about! Create practice essays based on questions you find below or on the Board of Studies website. |
How will the frames actually come up in the exams?
Both Section I and II will include questions about the frames. The question may tell you to use the frames, but it will not tell you which one to use. You may cover all the frames in your answer, which could make a great response. However, when deciding which information to include, there is usually a most appropriate frame to help you include the best information and ideas you have studied. You are expected to figure this out. Look for key words, such as the words and terms listed on the previous pages, to help you figure out the frame you should use.
Use the flashcards below to practice determining the frame you should base your answers on. When you get one right, click the correct cards pile. When you get one wrong, click the incorrect cards pile so you can come back to it for a closer look.

These flashcards contain real questions from official past HSC papers.
When you have practised and are able to recognise which frame to use, practice forming a short answer response to these questions, based on a variety of different types of artworks you can find online.
