What are the frames?"The frames" when studying visual arts, refers to the four lenses we use to look at art, in order to find meaning in an artwork.
These are the subjective, structural, cultural and postmodern frames. The four frames overlap and intersect at times, but they provide distinct points of view from which to discuss an artwork or a body of work. Using all four frames we can gain a holistic and deep understanding of an artwork. Using this siteClick on the frames below to find detailed information and activities for each.
It is most useful to use this site with reference to a particular artwork, so you have a context for using the frames. To the right is a list of websites where you can find artworks to study in-depth. For HSC students, there is a section on the use of the frames in the HSC exam.
